The Ankeny softball team split a pair of games against ranked opponents on Friday at the Creston Invitational.
The Hawkettes dropped a 5-4 decision to Atlantic, the No. 8 team in Class 3A. But they posted a 5-3 victory over Burlington, which is ranked 13th in Class 5A with a 19-2 record.
Kennedy Thomas (1-0) tossed an eight-hitter in the win over Burlington. She walked none and had two strikeouts.
Jasmine Rumley went 2-for-3 and hit her first home run of the season. She knocked in a pair of runs.
Marina Carter and Marina Smith each had a double for the Hawkettes. Smith, Anna Voigt and Kate Heine each had an RBI.
Peyton Daugherty had a big day at the plate. She went 2-for-3, stole two bases and scored a run against Burlington.
Daughery went 2-for-4 with a triple in the loss to Atlantic, which entered the tournament with a 10-0 mark. She scored one run and drove in another.
Rumley also had a triple and an RBI. Voigt went 2-for-2 and scored a run.
Ankeny used a four-run fourth inning to take a 4-2 lead. But Atlantic got a run in the bottom of the inning, then added two more in the sixth to earn the win.
Paige Jacobsen (6-2) took the loss. She allowed three earned runs on eight hits.
Ankeny (9-4) will return to action on Monday, when it travels to Waukee for a CIML Central Conference doubleheader against the No. 4 Warriors. The Hawkettes (4-2) are currently tied for the league lead with Waukee, No. 3 Valley and No. 10 Southeast Polk–who are all 3-1 in the conference.
