The Ankeny softball team is spending a lot of time on the road this week.
After splitting a doubleheader on Wednesday at Ames, the Hawkettes traveled to Clarke (Osceola) on Thursday and posted a 7-4 victory in a non-conference game. Now, the team will head back north for the Fort Dodge Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
Ankeny coach Dave Bingham is hoping that the weekend tournament will serve as a preview of next month’s Class 5A state tournament, which will also be held in Fort Dodge.
“We’d like to win five games in a row,” Bingham said after the Hawkettes won the finale of Wednesday’s doubleheader. “It takes five wins to win the state championship.”
Ankeny got its second straight win on Thursday, raising its record to 6-7 on the season. Paige Jacobsen (3-4) earned the victory, scattering 10 hits.
The Hawkettes never trailed after taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning. They scored in every inning but the seventh.
Ankeny pounded out 14 hits en route to the victory. Macey Filling led the way, going 3-for-4 with one RBI.
Jasmine Rumley went 2-for-3, stole three bases and scored three runs. Madeleine Murphy and Gillian Overturf also went 2-for-3 and had one RBI apiece.
Zoe Baker went 2-for-4 with a double. Anna Voigt went 1-for-3 and drove in three runs.
