The Ankeny girls’ swimming team has had some good battles with Johnston over the last couple of years.

The Hawkettes opened last season with a 102-84 victory over Johnston before the Dragons later edged Ankeny by four points to win the regional meet at Johnston. The Dragons then placed fifth at the state meet with 173 points, while Ankeny finished seventh with 105.

On Tuesday, the Hawkettes hosted Johnston in their dual-meet opener at Trail Point Aquatics Center. The Dragons won nine of the 11 swimming events and posted a 104-82 triumph.

“I was pleased with the heart this team showed,” said Ankeny coach Michelle Stout. “We were able to give Johnston some great races and gave the new members of the team a chance to compete at a high level.”

Ankeny’s Caroline Walker won the 100 butterfly. She posted a time of 1:01.70.

The Hawkettes later captured the 200 freestyle relay in 1:43.23. That team consisted of Josie Parton, Erica Peters, Gracie Lindaman and Sophie Loeffler.

Peters earlier won the diving event with a score of 287.30 points. Teammate Hannah Kolars was second, finishing with 220.30 points.

“The dive team had an outstanding night,” Stout said. “Erica continues to lead the way with another outstanding performance.”

Ankeny’s Anja Peck placed second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.50. The sophomore, who took seventh in that event at last year’s state meet in 1:07.65, met the state qualifying standard.

Peck was also the runner-up in the 200 individual medley. She was clocked in 2:16.20.

Lindaman placed second in the 50 freestyle in 25.84 seconds. She later took second in the 100 freestyle in 56.57.

Loeffler was also the runner-up in two individual events. She posted times of 2:00.05 in the 200 freestyle and 5:22.72 in the 500 freestyle.

Abbi Brown added a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke. She was clocked in 1:05.12.

Johnston’s Faith Frantum, Olivia Frantum and Olivia Swalley each won two individual events. Swalley also swam on the winning 200 medley relay and joined the Frantum sisters on the winning 400 freestyle relay.
