For the second time in three days, the Ankeny girls’ soccer players spent more time on the bus than they did on the pitch.
The second-ranked Hawkettes romped to a 12-0 victory on Thursday at Fort Dodge in their CIML Iowa Conference opener. The game ended at halftime via the mercy rule.
On Tuesday, Ankeny posted a 10-0 win at Ottumwa that ended in the 73rd minute. Several of the Hawkettes missed that game in order to compete at a track meet.
“We got those girls back tonight, so they got their first minutes of the week,” said Ankeny coach Simon Brown.
Ankeny (5-0) has yet to allow a goal this season, outscoring its opponents by a 29-0 margin. Thursday’s game was the season opener for the Dodgers (0-1).
Emma Gott had three goals and an assist to lead the Hawkettes. She also had a hat trick in the win over Ottumwa.
Brooke Harrington scored a pair of goals–matching her production from Tuesday night. Alli Macke, one of Ankeny’s dual sport athletes, also had two goals.
“We were a little more efficient in front of the goal today,” Brown said.
Avery Matthews had a goal and two assists in the win. Eden Gibson added a goal and an assist.
Other goals were scored by Allie Heller, Jerra Christensen and Maddie Walsh. Megan Rose contributed two assists, while Kennedy Macke added one.
“The goal this week was to sharpen our axe, getting us ready for the biggest game of the season thus far against Dowling Catholic,” Brown said. “We had a good couple of days of working toward our attacking movement and creating chances.”
The Hawkettes will host a non-conference game against No. 5 Dowling (2-0) on Monday. They will be looking to avenge last year’s 1-0 loss to the Maroons.
“The plan is to spend (Friday) and Sunday in training on more time without the ball for when we come up against a top Dowling side,” Brown said.
