The Ankeny Centennial girls’ golf team has been trying to shoot under 370 all season.
The Jaguars finally accomplished their goal on Tuesday.
Centennial posted a score of 366 and placed second among seven teams in the CIML Iowa Conference meet at The Legacy Golf Club in Norwalk.
“We were really excited with the meet,” said Centennial coach John Petersen. “It’s our first time breaking the 370 mark on a very difficult course. Meeting that goal was a tribute to our girls’ hard work in the offseason.”
Ankeny, meanwhile, finished in fifth place. The Hawkettes matched Ames with a 406 total, but the Little Cyclones placed fourth based on a better fifth score.
“I was very proud of the girls’ efforts the past two days with walking and playing two difficult courses in the heat and humidity!” said Ankeny coach Seth Hagarty. “We are going to take the day off (Wednesday) and rest up as we are playing in the Turk Bowman Invite (Thursday) at Veenker and it will once again be a very hot and humid round!”
Third-ranked Marshalltown shot a 349 to capture its second straight conference title. The Bobcats were led by Amber Henson, who carded a 2-over-par 74 to defend her individual crown.
Henson earned medalist honors by 13 strokes. Centennial’s Payton Drefke was the runner-up with an 87.
The Jaguars placed three golfers in the top five. Olivia Joensen took fourth with a 90, and Kaitlyn Ault was fifth with a 93.
Vivian Wilson added a 15th-place finish, shooting a 96. Grace Miller had a 111, and Tessa Woerdehoff finished with a 131.
Ankeny’s Naomi SchraderBacher placed 16th with a 98.
“Naomi did a fabulous job,” Hagarty said.
Addison Smith shot a 102, Isabella Ross and Olivia Froehlich each had a 103, Gia Blaser fired a 113, and Jori Webb added a 117.
