The Ankeny Centennial girls’ golfers were unhappy with their scores following Monday’s season opener.
Coach John Petersen, though, wasn’t disappointed with his team’s performance.
The Jaguars dropped a 188-189 decision to visiting Dowling Catholic in a CIML Conference dual meet at Briarwood Golf Club.
“The first meet of 2023 is under our belts,” Petersen said. “Our girls were not overly pleased with their scores, which is good. They know they can improve, and hopefully the weather will cooperate and we can get some quality practices in before our invitational next Monday.”
Centennial’s Payton Drefke carded an 8-over-par 44 on the front nine to earn medalist honors. She had a triple bogey on the par-5, No. 3 hole, but then made a par on three of her last six holes.
Teammate Vivian Wilson was the runner-up with a 45. She led Drefke by two strokes after seven holes, but then had a double bogey on the final two holes.
Olivia Joensen carded a 48 for the Jaguars. Kate Geiselhart fired a 52, Alexa Auderer had a 61, and Lydia Boehlert finished with a 65.
“We have only gotten a chance to play nine holes this season in practice, so I was not all that disappointed,” Petersen said. “We are replacing three spots on the varsity team from last year, and Dowling had all their girls back from last season.”
The Maroons posted four scores in the 40s, led by Kaylyn Sachs with a 46.
