Five of Ankeny’s nine individual state qualifiers advanced to Saturday’s finals in the boys’ state swim meet at Iowa City.
Senior Owen Schwebach qualified for the “A” final in both of his events during Friday’s preliminaries. Senior Owen Evans qualified for one “A” and one “B” final, while junior Brock Peterson qualified for the “B” final in both of his events.
Junior Finn Stukerjurgen and sophomore Bryer Pearson also qualified for a “B” final for the Hawks, who will also compete in all three relay events. The finals will begin at 12:30 p.m. at the University of Iowa’s Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.
Schwebach was the fourth-fastest qualifier in the 100 butterfly. He posted a time of 49.67 seconds to break the 50-second barrier for the first time this season, earning all-American consideration in the process.
Peterson was the ninth-fastest qualifier in that event in 51.10. Pearson was 12th in 51.73 and will join Peterson in the “B” final.
In the 50 freestyle, Schwebach and Evans swam in different preliminary heats, but ended up posting identical times of 21.44. They later held another heat to determine the eighth-fastest qualifier, which was won by Schwebach.
That allowed Schwebach to advance to the “A” final. Evans took ninth and will swim in the “B” final.
Evans later qualified for the “A” final in the 100 freestyle. He was the seventh-fastest qualifier in that event in 46.89.
Peterson was the 12th-fastest qualifier in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:55.83. He’ll be joined in the “B” final by Stukerjurgen, who was 14th in 1:57.88.
