The Ankeny boys’ tennis team is off to an 0-2 start.
The Hawks opened their season on Thursday with an 11-0 loss to visiting Waukee in a CIML Conference meet. The Warriors won 10 of the 11 matches in straight sets.
“The Waukee match was mostly learning from first-match jitters,” said Ankeny coach Ron Miller. “High school tennis is new to most of my team. The highest returning player from last year was (Cale Josten at) No. 6 singles (with the team’s top returnee, Dylan Victor, out with an injury).”
On Friday, Ankeny dropped an 8-3 decision to visiting Ottumwa (2-0) in a non-conference meet. The meet had been postponed earlier in the week due to bad weather.
“We saw some improvement against a pretty good team,” Miller said. “We were in almost every match. There were many deuce points that didn’t go our way, but the results were much better.”
Treyton Riesberg provided the Hawks’ lone victory in singles. He posted a 6-4, 6-4 win at the No. 6 spot.
Riesberg then teamed up with Garrett Weichers for another triumph at No. 2 doubles. They swept the match in two sets, but needed a pair of tiebreakers to do so.
Ankeny’s other victory came at No. 4 doubles, where Colin and Drew Lueck combined for a 6-2, 6-2 win.
The Hawks will play a conference meet at Johnston on Tuesday.
