The Ankeny bowling teams came away with a split in their season opener against Urbandale on Thursday at Game Day Lanes.
The girls’ squad defeated the J-Hawks by a score of 2,155 to 2,098 in the CIML Conference dual meet. Johanna Shaw led the way with a two-game series of 349.
Olivia Harris bowled a 309, Savannah Dye had a 280, Kali Ogg rolled a 248, Brooklyn Dietz had a 245, and Willow Zemen added a 152.
Olivia Aylsworth had a 322 to pace the Urbandale girls’ team, which dropped to 0-2.
“The girls have really worked hard at building cohesiveness among the team,” said Ankeny coach Nick Payton. “They have exceeded my expectations, especially for the first meet. Our goal is to continue to get better and work on skills to enhance our play this season.”
The boys’ team lost to Urbandale by a score of 2,879 to 2,376. Sebastian Cook bowled a 341 series for the Hawks.
Gavin Johnston had a 339, George Inman bowled a 308, Preston Carr had a 261, and Joel Hansen added a 228.
Damien Timm bowled a 411 series for the J-Hawks, who improved to 2-0.
“We have a young boys’ team that has gotten better over the offseason,” Payton said. “Right now the team is working on working through bakers (team format of bowling) and finding their marks on the lanes and being consistent. I am confident that every week the boys will get better.”
The Ankeny teams will host Dowling Catholic in their home opener on Thursday at B-Roll Bowling.
