Just getting on the mat Saturday was an accomplishment for the Ankeny girls’ wrestling team.
Ankeny hosted the Ankeny Centennial Duals at Northview Middle School, which was in danger of being cancelled due to the icy weather before a decision was made to hold the meet after a delayed start.
“We were very excited about the opportunity to compete,” said Ankeny coach Dustin Roland. “I want to thank our administration for their patience and support with the weather. Also, a huge shoutout to the parents who showed up Saturday morning for setup and tournament help. It takes a lot of people, and our people stepped up!”
Third-ranked Ankeny went on to win the tournament, posting a 3-0 record on the day. Roland’s team is now 7-0 on the season.
Ankeny posted victories over Indianola (60-15), West Marshall (66-6) and Des Moines Public Schools (47-28). DMPS also lost at Ankeny, 57-21, in the season opener on Nov. 19.
“The competition was very limited for obvious reasons, but we were able to find some good matchups throughout the day,” Roland said. “I would like to recognize Jaedyn Stites for stepping in to fill the spot at 115 (pounds). Freshman Jammie Krah continues to get better. Presley Sullivan is also starting to get a little more comfortable on the mat. Both were able to close the gap on opponents from DMPS from our first night out.
“It was also great to see our two deeps compete at the varsity level and get a dual win!” he added.
Ankeny will compete in the Dallas Center-Grimes Duals on Saturday.
