
The Ankeny girls’ soccer team could get a chance to avenge one of its losses with a trip to the state tournament on the line.
The fifth-ranked Hawkettes (8-2-3) have been placed in Class 3A Region 5 by the Iowa Girls’ High School Athletic Union, which announced its postseason pairings on Thursday.
Ankeny is the No. 1 seed and will host either Des Moines Lincoln (6-9-1) or Cedar Rapids Jefferson (3-10) in a regional semifinal on Wednesday, May 28 at 7 p.m. No. 12 Cedar Falls (8-3-2) will host Cedar Rapids Prairie (7-3-3) in the other semifinal in a rematch of a game that the Tigers won, 1-0, on their home pitch on May 1.
The winners of those two games will meet in the regional final on Friday, May 30 at 7 p.m. The highest remaining ranked team from the final rankings will host the regional final.
The Hawkettes have already played both of their potential opponents in the regional final. They opened the season on April 1 with a 1-0 win over Cedar Falls and later fell to Cedar Rapids Prairie, 2-1, on April 26.
No. 3 Ankeny Centennial, meanwhile, could face a rematch in its first postseason game. The Jaguars (10-3-2) are the No. 1 seed in Region 3 and will host either Urbandale (4-10-1) or Waterloo West (0-15) in a regional semifinal on Wednesday, May 28 at 7 p.m.
Centennial posted a 3-0 victory over the J-Hawks on April 18 at Urbandale.
No. 14 Des Moines Roosevelt (10-3-1) will host Marshalltown (10-3-3) in the other semifinal. The Roughriders won an earlier meeting, 3-2, on April 8 at Marshalltown.
