Morgan Fisher helped the Ankeny girls’ track team to a fifth-place finish in the Class 4A state meet Thursday through Saturday at Drake Stadium.
Fisher placed fourth in the 400 in 56.61 seconds and finished 11th in the 200 in 25.58. She also ran on the runner-up distance medley and fourth-place 4×400 relays.
As she now makes the transition to the softball field, where Ankeny will open its season on Tuesday at ADM (Adel), Fisher stopped moving long enough to answer a few questions from Ankeny Fanatic.
Here is some inside info on the freshman:
Congratulations on an outstanding meet. Overall, were you happy with how you performed?
Yes, I was very happy with how I performed. I thought I did the best I could in all of my races and gave it my all.
Your team was in contention for a top-three finish until the final event of the meet. Were you surprised at all that the team was in that position, or is that what you expected?
Yes, I was surprised because I knew it was going to be a close race for points with all the teams because we’ve battled with them all season.

You ran against your teammate, Lillian Buckley, during a preliminary heat of the 200 on Thursday and finished .01 seconds ahead of her. Was it fun to run against your teammate at the state meet?
We train together all season and work together to push each other to do our best.
You came back later that day and ran a personal best in the 400. Do you think the 400 is your best individual event right now?
Yes, I think the 400 is my best individual event because I worked hard all season and PR’d that race at state when I needed it most.
On Friday, you ran the 400-meter leg on the distance medley relay–an event that you did not run at the state qualifying meet–and your team battled Waukee Northwest to the wire while nearly breaking the 4-minute barrier. What were your goals going into the race, considering this was the first time that this group had run together?
Our goals were just to run how we always do, try our best, and compete with the other teams. I was just thinking to run my race and compete with anyone around me during my leg.
