The Ankeny girls’ tennis team saw a lot of progress during the Hawkettes’ 9-2 loss to visiting Waterloo Columbus in a non-conference meet on Thursday.
Ankeny posted a pair of straight-set victories against a team that is now 6-1 on the season. The Hawkettes dropped to 2-8.
“I’m really proud of the effort the girls put out there today,” said Ankeny coach Katie Owens. “We had some great rallies and moments where their teamwork and determination really showed.”
Ankeny got a lopsided win from Ella Dietrich at No. 5 singles. She rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Ava Kimball.
The Hawkettes’ No. 5 doubles team of Hannah Phillips and Kyra Swenson also dominated. They posted a double bagel, winning by a 6-0, 6-0 score.
“This match gave us a lot to build on, and I’m excited to see how they’ll grow from this experience,” Owens said.
Ankeny will travel to Waukee Northwest on Monday for a CIML Conference matchup against the Wolves (9-1).
