The Ankeny Centennial girls’ tennis team won four of the five matches that were decided by a third-set super tiebreaker and defeated visiting Ottumwa, 8-3, in a non-conference meet on Friday.
The Jaguars raised their overall record to 5-6. It was the first dual loss for the Bulldogs (7-1), who had wrapped up the Iowa Alliance Conference South Division title earlier in the week.
“Several of the matches went to tiebreakers, and we were able to come out on top in most of them, which showed the grit and hard-working attitude of this team,” said Centennial coach Alli Gustafson.
Imrie Hanson accounted for two of Centennial’s come-from-behind victories. She posted a 1-6, 6-2, 1-0 (7) win over Ilana Vasconez at No. 5 singles, then teamed up with Kaley Swanson for a 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11) triumph over Ava Barnes and Naw Clay at No. 3 doubles.
“It was great to see the team rely on consistency and smart shot placement to secure their wins,” Gustafson said. “The fight, as well as composure, our players showed in the close moments helped push us across the finish line.”
The Jaguars will host a CIML Conference meet against Johnston (7-2) on Monday. It will be Senior Night.
