The Class 4A boys’ golf district assignments were announced on Wednesday by the Iowa High School Athletic Association.
Ankeny Centennial will play at the Fort Dodge Country Club on Monday, Oct. 6. Ankeny is headed to Copper Creek Golf Course on Tuesday, Oct. 7.
“I think I like (our draw) better than Mike probably likes his,” said Centennial coach Andrew Reedy, referring to Ankeny coach Mike Weddingfeld. “Ankeny’s is clearly the toughest district.”
The Hawks will get a chance to see Copper Creek on Sept. 24, when they compete in the Southeast Polk Invitational.
“The team and I look forward to next week and playing at Copper Creek since that is where we are headed for districts,” said Weddingfeld. “It will be nice to be close to home, but there are several really good teams there as well that we will have to play our best to beat.”
The Copper Creek district includes six of the top 17 teams in Class 4A, headed by No. 2 Dowling Catholic. No. 5 Valley, No. 10 Waukee, No. 12 Norwalk, No. 15 Southeast Polk and No. 17 Indianola are also in the 14-team field.
The Hawks are currently ranked 22nd.
The Fort Dodge district includes No. 4 Johnston, the defending state champion. No. 3 Waukee Northwest and No. 6 Dallas Center-Grimes are also in the 15-team field.
The Jaguars are ranked 13th.
“We are in a district with some familiar foes,” Reedy said. “The reality is that we will likely have to beat at least one team we haven’t beaten yet this year. Northwest, Johnston and DC-G are the top three teams, I would say. We have been right there multiple times with DC-G, including at the Ankeny Invite, our own Jesse Peck Invite and Fort Dodge Invite. We lost to them by three (strokes) at both Ankeny and our meet. And we lost to them by seven at Fort Dodge on a day McCoy (Miller) played his worst round of the year.
“We will have to have a good day, and that is just fine. We definitely have the ability to get through our district, and I feel great about our chances to do so. It will be fun to motivate the kids and go to work preparing for this tournament,” he added.
The other district sites are Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls and Emeis Golf Course in Davenport.
