The addition of Everett Bloyer to the lineup provided a spark for the Ankeny Centennial boys’ golf team on Monday.
Coach Andrew Reedy is hoping that it can carry over to the next couple of meets.
“Everett has been playing really good golf the last week, and he kept it up (Monday),” Reedy said after Bloyer shot a 1-over-par 73 in a CIML Conference triangular meet at Briarwood Golf Club. “He made one bad swing that resulted in a double bogey on No. 14. Otherwise, he was almost flawless. I’m excited for him and hope he can be the spark we need at districts.”
Bloyer led the way as Centennial posted a 306 total on its home course. It was the Jaguars’ first competitive round at Briarwood since the Jesse Peck Invitational on Aug. 18.
Centennial came away with a split, losing to Waukee (295) while earning a victory over Urbandale (327). The Jaguars finished with a 2-6 record in the conference.
Waukee improved to 4-4. Urbandale dropped to 0-6.
The Warriors were led by Jonathan Ward, who carded an 8-under-par 64 to earn medalist honors. Teammate Canon Carlson was the runner-up with a 73.
McCoy Miller overcame a slow start to shoot a 75 for the Jaguars.
“McCoy was 4-over-par through three holes), but then played the last 15 holes in 1-under,” Reedy said. “He has been so good for us this season. I am really proud of him.”
Centennial’s Bennett Lewis fired a 78.
“Bennett continued his stellar play as a freshman and is a consistent force we will need to advance to state,” Reedy said. “He told me he putted poorly, but I am so pleased with his season thus far. It is really impressive for a kid that hits it 50-plus yards shorter than the kids he is competing against.”
Centennial’s Kinnick Nelson shot an 80. Colby Zinn had an 81, and Tiernan Logan added an 83.
“The other guys struggled at some point in their rounds, but had some bright spots,” Reedy said.
The Jaguars will compete in the conference meet on Wednesday at Beaver Creek before heading to the Fort Dodge Country Club on Monday for a Class 4A district meet.
“I am continuing to believe our best golf is in front of us and excited for the opportunity to play spoiler as an underdog at districts!” Reedy said.
