Former Ankeny tennis star Kira Smith made a successful collegiate debut on Friday.
Iowa State opened its first-ever home fall tournament by going undefeated in singles on day one of the event. Smith, a freshman who won the Class 2A state singles title last spring, posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Addison Renfro of Kansas State.
Smith also teamed up with Glennah Langford of Arkansas to defeat the Wildcats’ duo of Renfro and Mallory Renfro in doubles, 8-2.
“Kira had played against Glennah in a 14U junior tournament in Lincoln, and they both had been coached by KU Tennis Center coach Jared Ward at different times in their careers,” said former Ankeny coach Steve Smith, Kira’s father.
The Cyclones will be back in action for day two at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
