Ankeny Centennial’s McCoy Miller carded an 11-over-par 83 in the opening round of the boys’ Class 4A state golf meet on Monday at Hyperion Field Club in Johnston. He is part of an eight-way tie for 57th place in the field of 82 golfers.
Miller began his round on the back nine and got off to a good start, making a par on each of the first three holes. But he made a double bogey on the par-4 No. 13 hole and then bogeyed eight of his next 10 holes before finishing his round with two more bogeys.
The highlight of Miller’s round came on the par-4 No. 15 hole, where he made his lone birdie of the day.
Miller played in the same group with Jonathan Ward of Waukee, who shot a 3-under 69 to take the first-round lead. The second-ranked Ward made four birdies and then had an eagle on the par-5 No. 6 hole.

Only two other golfers broke par on the day. Jaxon Adkisson of North Scott fired a 70, and No. 1 Andrew Johannsen of Johnston–last year’s state runner-up–had a 71.
Fourth-ranked Dowling Catholic shot a 295 to take the lead in the team race. No. 3 Johnston, which is seeking its third title in four years, is in second place with a 302.
Miller will again tee off from the No. 10 hole to begin Tuesday’s final round, starting at 10:10 a.m. He will be part of a three-man group along with Hayden Stockberger of Indianola and Jay McCausland of Waterloo West.
We will have more coverage of the meet following the final round.
