The Ankeny wrestling team went 2-1 and placed third in its pool on Friday at the Battle of Waterloo.
The Hawks opened the tournament with a 37-32 victory over Waverly-Shell Rock. They then dropped a 41-31 decision to Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, one of the top teams in Class 2A, in the semifinals.
Clarion-Goldfield-Dows avenged a 54-25 loss to Ankeny in the Silver Pool at last year’s tournament, when the Hawks went on to place sixth in the 32-team field.
Coach Jack Wignall’s squad rebounded from the defeat with a 44-29 win over Cedar Rapids Prairie in the third-place match.
The Hawks will take a 4-2 record into the Saturday portion of the tournament, when they’ll wrestle for ninth through 12th place.
