Coming out of the holiday break, the Ankeny wrestling team couldn’t have asked for a tougher matchup than the one that faced the Hawks on Thursday.
Coach Jack Wignall’s team traveled to Southeast Polk for a CIML Conference dual meet and dropped a 70-6 decision to the Rams, who recorded eight pins and two technical falls. The Hawks were without two of their top wrestlers in Ben Walsh and Calvin Rathjen.
Ankeny’s lone win of the night came at 113 pounds, where Eddie Salgado pinned Jaxsen Vestal. He got the fall in 1 minute 23 seconds.

The Hawks lost a pair of close decisions at 190 and 215. After Ryleigh Egeberg dropped an 8-7 decision to Scott Smith, Layne Hearne suffered a 4-2 loss to LaFoy Hall.
Seven of Southeast Polk’s eight pins came in the opening period. The Rams also won by forfeit at 165.
The loss dropped Ankeny’s records to 2-2 in the conference and 7-3 overall.

The Hawks will compete in the Jack Mendenhall Invitational on Saturday at Ames. They placed fourth at last year’s tournament.
