Isabelle Shafer won an individual title at 110 pounds to lead the Ankeny girls’ wrestling team to a fourth-place finish among 20 squads in the Colfax-Mingo Invitational on Saturday.
Ankeny, the No. 10 team in Class 2A, finished with 120 points. Coach Dustin Roland rested many of his varsity regulars for Friday’s regional tournament at Glenwood.
“This was a great tournament in a great facility late in the season that has teams we don’t see throughout the year,” said Roland. “It was a great place for our younger varsity-level girls to get some much-needed mat time. We had some good results, and this particular group all competed well.”
Pella won the team title with 193 points. Iowa Valley (Marengo) was the runner-up with 178.
Shafer, a freshman, won all three of her matches by fall to raise her record to 27-15. In the finals, she pinned Kylee Adams of Newton in 2 minutes 47 seconds.
“Izzy is on a roll!” Roland said. “She is a tough one who has competed the last two meets with a nagging elbow injury.”
Ankeny got third-place finishes from Bradlynn Virchow at 120, Audri Headrick at 135 and Joyce Kat at 170.

Virchow pinned Eva Kriegel of Iowa Valley in 39 seconds in the third-place match. She avenged a quarterfinal loss to Kriegel while improving to 24-13.
“Brad wrestled a complete tournament,” Roland said. “Consistency is something she has been working on, and she put it together.”
Headrick pinned Kenadi Montgomery of Pella in 3:19 for her fourth fall of the day. She lifted her mark to 15-5.
“Audri had another great day as she winds down her career,” Roland said.
Kat, meanwhile, pinned Gabriella Eckard of Boone in 1:51 to place third. She is now 11-17 on the season.
“I have a feeling Joyce is going to be pretty good by the time her career comes to an end,” Roland said.
Ankeny will compete in the Pleasantville Duals on Monday.
“We will take another hybrid group,” Roland said. “We’re hoping to try to find Lauren Watson the two wins that she needs to reach 100 for her career.”
