The top-ranked Johnston girls’ basketball team will take a 68-game winning streak into Monday’s showdown at No. 3 Dowling Catholic.
The two-time defending Class 5A state champion Dragons can clinch at least a tie for the CIML Conference title with another victory over Dowling. They won the first meeting against the Maroons, 46-43, on Dec. 16.
Johnston has already swept No. 2 Waukee Northwest, which sits in third place in the league. The Dragons still have to play at No. 7 Valley, No. 12 Ankeny Centennial and No. 5 Ankeny, while the Maroons will close out the regular season against Northwest on Feb. 13.
On the boys’ side, No. 2 Waukee Northwest is also closing in on the league crown. The Wolves will play at No. 4 Waukee on Tuesday and at No. 3 Dowling on Feb. 13, but they have already won the first meeting against those second-place teams by 20 or more points.
