The Ankeny wrestling team sits in 10th place with 34.5 points heading into the second day of the Class 3A state tournament at the Casey’s Center.
Crosstown rival Ankeny Centennial, meanwhile, bounced back from a winless opening round on Wednesday to advance four wrestlers into Thursday’s quarterfinals. The Jaguars are tied for 22nd place with 23 points.
Two-time defending champion Southeast Polk leads the Class 3A field with 68 points, 10 more than North Scott. Indianola is in third with 55.5 points, and Dowling Catholic is fourth with 52.
Seven of Ankeny’s nine state qualifiers will be back on the mat Thursday night. The Hawks advanced Ben Walsh at 120 pounds and Calvin Rathjen at 165 into the quarterfinals, while five others are still alive in the consolation bracket.
All four of Centennial’s top-eight seeds won their second-round matches after receiving byes. Cale Vandermark at 126, Ethan Sodergren at 144, Max Dhabolt at 175 and Brandon Bogseth at 215 each moved on to the quarterfinals.

“This is my first year at state due to (various) reasons in the past, so I’m really excited,” said Bogseth. “I was a little nervous. I just kept my composure and made sure to be in the moment.”
The seventh-seeded Bogseth escaped from No. 10 Nick Milburn of Newton in the fourth overtime period to post a 3-2 victory. Neither wrestler was able to record a takedown in the match, but Bogseth was confident that he could eventually outlast his opponent.
“I wrestled him at districts for true second and I could just tell, because I pinned him in the third period,” Bogseth said. “I could just tell that I had more (energy) than him.”
Bogseth will face another rematch on Thursday when he meets No. 2 Trey Feist of North Scott. Feist pinned Bogseth in the semifinals at the district tournament.
“My goal is to place,” Bogseth said.

The No. 3 Sodergren advanced with a fall over No. 19 Ricky Titus of Cedar Falls.
“I saw him wrestle earlier, and he looked pretty decent,” Sodergren said. “I knew it was going to be tough, but overall I thought I was going to win it.”
Sodergren pinned Titus in just 51 seconds.
“That actually was not my intention,” Sodergren said. “Going into that match I was thinking, ‘Shots, shots, shots.’ It just happened that way I guess. He was super low, and it just happened.”
The No. 2 Dhabolt and the No. 4 Vandermark both recorded technical falls on Wednesday. Dhabolt rolled to a 20-3 win over No. 18 Eli Cox of Indianola, while Vandermark cruised to a 19-3 triumph over No. 20 DeForrest Snow of Mason City.

Dhabolt, who his seeking his second state title, will face No. 7 Gabe Rubino of Waukee Northwest in the quarterfinals. Vandermark will meet Rubino’s teammate, No. 5 Joey Cahill, as he tries to reach the semifinals for the fourth straight year.
Sodergren will also collide with a familiar opponent on Thursday. He will meet No. 6 Hayden Hutt of Waukee.
Ankeny got dominant performances from both of its top-eight seeds.
The No. 3 Walsh built a 9-1 lead over No. 14 Zayd Igram of Cedar Rapids Jefferson before pinning him in 3:39. He will meet No. 11 Hugo Hughes of Iowa City West in the quarterfinals.

The No. 3 Rathjen held a 4-0 lead over No. 14 Kayden Crispin of Waukee after the first two periods. He then used two takedowns and a near-fall to extend the margin to 13-1 before pinning Crispin in 5:56–with just 4 seconds left in the match.
Rathjen will face No. 6 Nolan Dao of Clear Creek-Amana in the quarterfinals.
Five other Hawks will need to win twice on Thursday to become placewinners. They are No. 13 Eddie Salgado at 106, No. 19 Eli Perez at 126, No. 15 Aiden Winkie at 138, No. 20 Jacob Haase at 150 and No. 13 Ryleigh Egeberg at 190.
