‘I have officially entered into the transfer portal’: Winkel likely headed to Division I

Former Ankeny Centennial basketball star Luke Winkel is looking for a new home.

The St. Cloud State sophomore guard announced his departure via social media on Thursday.

“I have officially entered into the transfer portal,” Winkel tweeted on X.

Winkel led St. Cloud State to an historic season. The 25th-ranked Huskies won the regular-season title in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, reached the second round of the NCAA Division II national tournament and finished with a 26-7 record.

Winkel averaged 18.7 points, 4.0 assists and 3.6 rebounds per game. He became the 47th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point career milestone in his final game for the Huskies, when he scored 15 points in a 61-55 loss to Minnesota Duluth in a Central Regional semifinal on Sunday night at Lee Arena in Topeka, Kan.

Winkel was a repeat selection to the all-conference first team and was named to the all-tournament team after leading St. Cloud State to a runner-up finish at the NSIC tournament. He was also a second-team all-region pick.

This marks the second straight year that a former standout from Ankeny will leave the NSIC after enjoying a monster season. Last year, Minnesota State Moorhead guard Carson Johnson left for Denver after being named the MVP of the conference tournament, and he went on to become the Summit League Player of the Year in his first season with the Pioneers.

Winkel is likely headed to Division I as well.
