The Ankeny boys’ tennis team dropped an 11-0 decision to visiting Valley in the CIML Conference opener for both squads on Friday.
The Tigers won nine of the 11 matches in straight sets. They improved to 2-0 overall, while Ankeny fell to 1-1.
“We did not play up to our capabilities,” said Ankeny coach Ron Miller. “Valley was better than anticipated, and we were worse than expected. My better returning players were not focused nor did we see their usual effort in problem solving.”
Ankeny’s Michael Black won the first set at No. 3 singles before Valley’s Frank Scott rallied for a 2-6, 6-1, 1-0 (8) victory. Black and Grady Schlosser then lost at No. 2 doubles in similar fashion, dropping a 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (8) decision to Scott and Vivaan Desai.
“The new players, No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles were the only bright spots on the day,” Miller said.
The Hawks were slated to play in the Johnston Invitational on Saturday, but the meet was postponed due to rain. It has been rescheduled for Friday.
Ankeny will face crosstown rival Ankeny Centennial on Tuesday.
