Two weeks ago, the Ankeny Centennial girls’ soccer team posted a huge 2-1 victory at Valley.
On Friday, the top-ranked Jaguars returned to Valley Stadium and recorded another 2-1 win, this time against No. 12 Linn-Mar (Marion) as part of the Valley Invitational.
Centennial rallied for two goals in the second half to remain unbeaten in May, improving to 8-0 this month. The Jaguars are now 13-2 overall while Linn-Mar dropped to 10-4.
“It was a great win against a very quality side,” said Centennial coach Chris Allen. “Both coaching staffs have been wanting to have our teams play one another. We are grateful that Valley let us into the invite to get a game against them.”
After trailing at halftime 1-0, Centennial tied the game on a goal by Kenzie Geiger. It was her sixth of the season.
“We are very proud of how our girls came back in the second half,” Allen said. “Geiger had an incredible shot from the top of the 18 on a deceptive pass from (Allie) Wyckoff to knot it up.”
Marisa Smith later scored the go-ahead goal for the Jaguars. She found the net for the second time this season.
“Marisa put it in on a backpost pass from (Miranda) Wood,” Allen said. “(Olivia) Wee played an incredible ball across the 18 to kick off that goal.
“All in all, we had a lot of fight from the team in the second half to create some solid chances,” he added.
