Ankeny assistant football coach Greg Schoon collapsed on the sidelines during Friday’s playoff game and left Ankeny Stadium in an ambulance.
A police officer performed CPR, and a defibrillator was used. According to Ankeny Fanatic reporter Stephen McDaniel, someone was seen raising a fist in the air as Schoon was loaded into the ambulance, eliciting cheers from both teams on the field.
“I went down and saw Greg in the hospital after the game,” said Ankeny coach Jeff Bauer. “His chest was sore from the CPR obviously. He was able to talk and communicate like normal. Talked about what he ate (Friday). The doctor was in there , and they liked his test results to that point–his vitals were all good. He’ll be there through at least Monday.”
Schoon is a defensive line coac and a former Iowa State player. He previously was the head coach at Des Moines East.
The incident happened shortly after 9:30 p.m. The game was delayed in the fourth quarter and eventually resumed.
Ankeny went on to defeat Iowa City Liberty, 51-29, in the Class 5A quarterfinals.
