Ankeny volleyball coach Joe Morton was hoping for a consistent effort from his team on Saturday at the Marj White Invitational.
And that’s what he got.
The seventh-ranked Hawkettes posted a 3-2 record in Valley’s round-robin tournament. All five of their matches came against Class 5A ranked opponents.
“We were able to play at a consistent level and give ourselves a better chance to win matches,” said Morton, whose team is now 7-6 on the season. “The level of competition these past two weekends has been outstanding, and we are really happy with the way our kids are competing.”
Ankeny posted a 21-9, 21-18 victory over No. 6 Waukee. The Hawkettes also defeated No. 8 Dubuque Hempstead, 21-10, 21-10, and No. 12 Iowa City West, 21-15, 21-15.
One of Ankeny’s losses came to No. 3 Valley, which defeated the Hawkettes for the second time this season. The Tigers won a three-set match at the Ankeny Centennial Early Bird Invitational on Aug. 25.
The Hawkettes also dropped a 21-15, 21-18 decision to No. 11 Dowling Catholic. The Maroons will visit Ankeny for a rematch on Sept. 11.
“Taylor Richards had a great weekend again for us,” Morton said. “She was solid on serve receive and had a great day of hitting as well. We are looking forward to our match at Mason City Tuesday and another tough tournament next weekend in Iowa City.”
