The Class 4A substate baseball pairings have now been determined.
Seventh-ranked Ankeny Centennial has received the No. 1 seed in Substate 3, giving the Jaguars a more favorable path to the state tournament than crosstown rival Ankeny, which was awarded the No. 3 seed in Substate 2. The Hawks will likely have to win three games in order to reach Principal Park, one more than Centennial.
The Jaguars (20-9) will host Waterloo West (7-17) in a substate quarterfinal on July 19 at 7 p.m. With a win, they would advance to the substate final on July 24.
No. 8 Southeast Polk (23-9) is seeded second and will host a quarterfinal against Cedar Rapids Kennedy (10-16), while third-seeded Marshalltown (18-13) will host Cedar Falls (12-15). The winners of those two games will meet in a semifinal on July 22, if Centennial wins its first-round game.
Ankeny (14-11), meanwhile, will host a quarterfinal against Fort Dodge (10-19) on July 19 at 7 p.m. The Hawks were nosed out for the No. 2 seed by 10th-ranked Mason City (18-10), which will host a quarterfinal against Des Moines Lincoln (11-20).
No. 4 Des Moines Roosevelt (20-4) is the No. 1 seed and will host a quarterfinal against Des Moines Hoover (2-24). With a victory, the Roughriders would advance to the substate final on July 24.
If the higher seeds all win, Ankeny would have to travel to Mason City for a semifinal game on July 22.
