Former Ankeny Centennial football standout Trey Winters has found a new home.
The offensive lineman announced earlier this month via Twitter that he had committed to play for McNeese State, one of the top FCS programs in the country.
“I am excited to announce that I will be joining McNeese State University to join the Cowboys,” Winters tweeted. “I’m so thankful for my teammates and coaches that helped me get to this point.”
Winters was a standout defensive lineman at Centennial who made 39.5 tackles as a senior in 2017. He twice helped the Jaguars reach the Class 4A semifinals.
Winters spent his first collegiate season at Iowa as a preferred walk-on. That’s when he made the switch to the offensive line.
“I had a good time with my teammates and had a lot of growth during my first year there,” Winters said. “After my spring semester there, I decided to transfer schools and decided to go to Iowa Central to get some playing time and earn a scholarship spot on another team.”
The 6-foof-6, 344-pound Winters helped Iowa Central to a 6-3 record in 2021. The Tritons played a spring schedule that concluded on Saturday with a 23-21 victory over New Mexico Military in the Graphic Edge Bowl at Fort Dodge.
During the season, Winters attracted the attention of several schools.
“I got mainly a lot of offers from (Division II schools) like Northern State, Minnesota-Mankato and Western Missouri,” Winters said. “I really enjoyed talking with the (McNeese) coaches when they first contacted me, and having a good relationship with the staff is one of the most important things to me, since getting along with teammates and enjoying everything else usually comes naturally I’ve found.”
