Ankeny Centennial boys’ track coach Nate Smith has been named a Class 4A At-Large Coach of the Year by the Iowa Association of Track Coaches.
Smith guided Centennial to a third-place finish in last month’s Class 4A state meet, the school’s highest finish ever. The Jaguars racked up 61 points, finishing behind only Cedar Falls (87) and Dowling Catholic (77).
Centennial won a state title in the sprint medley relay–the third relay crown in school history. The foursome of D’Eric Smith, Dominic Berry, Trey Porter and Tommy Collins posted a time of 1:31.72, which set a school record and was the eighth-fastest time in state history.
The Jaguars got runner-up finishes from Smith in the 100 and Collins in the 400. They also placed second in the 4×200 and 4×400 relays.
