The Ankeny boys’ golf team dropped a 158-165 decision to Waukee Northwest in a CIML Iowa Conference dual meet on Tuesday at The Legacy Golf Club in Norwalk.
The Hawks dropped to 2-2 in the conference.
“We played OK on a tough golf course,” said Ankeny coach Mike Weddingfeld. “We didn’t do a very good job of eliminating the bigger numbers–we had several double and triple bogeys across the top six players. The Legacy is not a course that the team has played very much so that was definitely a home-course advantage for Waukee Northwest, but that is golf. We hope to bounce back (Wednesday) at our home (invitational) and look for better scores.”
Ankeny’s Drew Hensen was the co-medalist along with Northwest’s Pryce Sandfort, the Wolves’ No. 4 player. They each carded a 3-over-par 38 on the front nine.
Hensen bogeyed three of the first four holes, but made birdies on the par-5, No. 6 and the par-4, No. 8 holes. He had a double bogey on the par-4, No. 9 hole.
Jake O’Brien and Jonathon Carey each had a 42 for the Hawks. Jacob Adams shot a 43, Evan Chapman fired a 44, and Aivin Legg had a 47.
“I was proud of the guys for continuing to work hard and keep their cool on a tough course that gave us some fits at times,” Weddingfeld said. “Knowing how to control your emotions while playing is huge and for a young team this squad does a great job of taking what comes their way and just doing their best on unfamiliar courses.”
