Ankeny Centennial senior Cleao Murray has been named to the Class 5A West all-district girls’ basketball team along with Ankeny standouts Savannah Gage and Jenna Pitz. The teams were selected by the Iowa Girls’ Coaches Association.
Murray, a 5-foot-8 guard, has helped the Jaguars to a 20-3 record and a berth in next week’s Class 5A state tournament at Wells Fargo Arena. She is averaging a team-high 14.3 points and 1.8 steals per game.
Murray also leads Centennial with 38 3-point goals. She is shooting 47.4 percent from the field, 36.2 percent from 3-point range and 81.4 percent at the free-throw line.
Gage and Pitz, meanwhile, helped Ankeny to its best season since the split into two high schools in 2013. The Hawkettes went 16-7 and tied Centennial and Waukee Northwest for the CIML Iowa Conference title.
Pitz, a junior guard, averaged a team-high 11.8 points, 3.6 assists and 2.1 steals. She scored a career-high 24 points to lead Ankeny to its first win ever against Centennial, 49-45, on Feb. 11.
Gage, a freshman guard, averaged 10.6 points. She shot 86.5 percent at the free-throw line (45-of-52).
Top-ranked Johnston placed three players on the 19-player squad–Anna Gossling, Jada Gyamfi and Alli Tanke. Dragons coach Chad Jilek was named district coach of the year.
