Former Ankeny Centennial basketball standout Sydney Wycoff has earned all-region honors from the National Christian College Athletic Association.
Wycoff, a junior guard for the Mid-America Christian women’s team, was selected to the all-Central Region second team. It is her first all-region honor.
The 5-foot-6 Wycoff is in the midst of her best year offensively, scoring 261 points (8.7 average) on 48.6 percent shooting. She has pulled down 126 rebounds to go with 74 assists and is tied for second on the team with 49 steals.
In a thrilling 83-74 win over No. 9 Wayland Baptist on Jan. 20, Wycoff dished out a career-high eight assists while committing no turnovers. She scored a season-high 17 points on 4-of-8 shooting and 7-for-7 from the free-throw line.
Mid-America Christian is in the midst of its best season in program history, as the Evangels entered postseason play with a 27-4 mark overall (.871) and recorded a SAC record 19 wins (19-3, .864). With a win over Oklahoma City in the SAC Quarterfinals on Feb. 25, the Evangels tied the program record for the most victories in a single season (2004-05, 27-8).
MACU then broke that mark with a 76-64 win over Briar Cliff for the program’s first-ever NAIA National Championship Tournament victory on Friday at Wichita, Kan. Wycoff had seven points, two rebounds and two assists in the win, including a 3-point goal that capped a 7-0 run which broke a 9-9 tie in the first quarter.
No. 24 and sixth-seeded MACU will now prepare for its opportunity to advance to the NAIA National Championships final site as the Evangels will take on third-seeded and 14th-ranked Clarke College for a 3 p.m. tip-off inside the Garvey Center on Saturday in the NAIA Opening Round finale.
