The Ankeny girls’ track team opened its outdoor season on Saturday with a fourth-place finish in the Mustang Classic at Dallas Center-Grimes.
Cedar Rapids Prairie won the seven-team meet with 133.5 points. Southeast Polk was second with 123, followed by Ames with 121 and Ankeny with 107.5.
“It was a very productive day for us,” said Ankeny coach Thomas Cotter. “We placed fourth against teams that we feel we will be fighting with for podium spots (at the state meet). We are without our soccer girls for a few meets so this gives us an excellent opportunity to get a time on a few others so we know exactly how we want to attack things when we are at full strength.”
Kendra Winfrey provided the Hawkettes’ lone victory. She won the shot put with a toss of 41 feet 4 inches.
“Kendra continues to impress,” Cotter said. “She improved upon her throw from Iowa State.”
Hannah Baier added a third-place finish in the discus. She had a throw of 112-10.
“Hannah had an excellent start to the discus,” Cotter said. “There were some tough conditions, and she still threw good enough for the eighth-farthest throw in all classes so far this season.”
Ankeny’s Eva Fulk placed second in the 400. She posted a time of 1:02.36.
Also placing second for the Hawkettes were Gracie Lindaman in the 400 hurdles (1:10.77), Drew Beason in the 1,500 (5:07.26) and Reagan Hanfelt in the high jump (4-10).
Ankeny also took second in the distance medley relay with a time of 4:35.57.
