The Ankeny boys’ track team placed fifth in the Brooks Relays on Saturday at Valley, while Ankeny Centennial finished eighth in the 11-team field.
Iowa City High won the meet with 142 points, edging Dowling Catholic by seven points. The Hawks finished with 60 points.
“The guys really competed well,” said Ankeny coach Nick Nelson. “We were very excited that the athletes had a good day to compete.”
Centennial coach Nate Smith was similarly pleased with the decent weather conditions.
“It was a nice day for a track meet,” said Smith, whose team finished with 45 points.
Ankeny’s lone victory came in the 4×400 relay. The foursome of Tyson Miller, Jake Bosch, Jack Belding and Tyrese Miller posted a time of 3:25.91, finishing nearly 7 seconds ahead of runner-up Valley.
Tyrese Miller added a second-place finish in the 100. He turned in a time of 11.20 seconds against a very competitive field.
Defending Class 4A state champion Mikey McClain of Dowling won the race in 11.05. Titus Christiansen of Southeast Polk and Carter Erickson of Indianola placed third and fourth, respectively–matching their finishes at last year’s state meet.
Miller also anchored the runner-up 4×200 relay, joining his younger brother, Belding and Caden Henkes in that event. The Hawks posted a time of 1:32.54.
Bosch took second in the 800. He was clocked in 2:00.06.
Levi Hill was the runner-up in the 1,600 in 4:32.28. Carter Accola took third in the 110 hurdles in 15.71, and Cade Pederson placed fifth in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet 3 inches.
“I am proud of the coaches and athletes right now,” Nelson said. “I am looking forward to the rest of the season.”
Centennial got a second-place finish from Sam Dietz in the shot put. He surpassed the 50-foot mark with a throw of 50-10.5.
“Sam has put in a lot of work over the offseason,” Smith said. “Coach Werkman has the throwing crew off to a great start.”
Cooper Majors placed fourth for the Jaguars in the 400 hurdles in 58.54 seconds. Teammate Drake Dittmar was fifth in the same event in 59.14.
Tyler Schermerhorn took ninth in the 3,200 in 10:07.94, finishing just .03 seconds behind Ankeny’s Hill. AJ Schermerhorn was 13th in 10:21.75.
“The Schermerhorn brothers both PR’d,” Smith said. “Those two are a tough duo.”
Both teams will be back in action on Tuesday. The Hawks will compete in the DouBrava Invitational at Urbandale, while Centennial is headed to the Hi Covey Relays at Ames.
