Mason Lyons was a bright spot for the Ankeny boys’ tennis team on Monday.
Lyons won both of his matches in the Hawks’ 8-3 loss to visiting Johnston in a non-conference meet. He posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Tyler Barp at No. 1 singles, then teamed up with Dylan Victor for a three-set win at No. 1 doubles.
“Mason had a good day,” said Ankeny coach Ron Miller. “That was our first win at No. 1 singles since 2019.”
Ankeny’s other win came at No. 4 singles, where Sam Parkinson rallied for a three-set victory over Declan Schuessler. However, the Hawks lost two other close matches in singles.
“We could have been ahead 4-2 after singles,” Miller said. “After that, we struggled with doubles. Losing our No. 5 singles player affected our doubles teams more than singles so it will take a bit of sorting out.”
The Dragons raised their record to 3-2. Ankeny dropped to 1-4.
The Hawks will host a non-conference meet against Des Moines Roosevelt (5-1) on Tuesday.
“There’s no time to do much but play with six matches this week and next and more bad weather projected to come our way,” Miller said.
