It was a successful Senior Night for the Ankeny girls’ soccer team.
The second-ranked Hawkettes defeated visiting Mason City, 4-0, in a CIML Iowa Conference game on Tuesday. Most of Ankeny’s starting lineup consisted of seniors.
“We were able to start seven seniors and get all the seniors in the program playing time,” said Ankeny coach Simon Brown.
Ankeny dominated the game, but had trouble finding the net. The Hawkettes outshot Mason City by a 33-0 margin–with 18 of the attempts on target.
Brown joked that Mason City parked its bus in front of the goal.
“The girls had a tough time breaking down their bank of eight players, the linesmen thought they were getting paid commission on offsides calls, and their keeper was phenomenal,” Brown said.
Ankeny held a 3-0 lead at halftime, then added another goal in the second half. Freshman Camryn Dietz scored a pair of goals for the Hawkettes.
Alli Macke and Elizabeth Proctor each had a goal and an assist. Allie Heller and Kennedy Macke each added an assist.
“The girls found different ways to break down an ultra defensive team and win comfortably in the end,” Brown said. “With better finishing the score could have easily been double.
“Ironically, on Senior Night, it was the freshmen that scored three goals and Lizzo the sophomore got the first. Which just goes to show the depth of the squad and our ability to find different ways and players to break down defensive teams,” he added.
Ankeny raised its records to 3-0 in the league and 9-0 overall. Mason City dropped to 0-4 and 5-5, and has now been outscored, 26-0, in its four conference losses.
The Hawkettes will play in the Tournament of Champions on Friday and Saturday at Burlington.
