The Ankeny girls’ golf team dropped a 191-211 decision to host Johnston in its CIML Conference opener on Wednesday at Jester Park.
Ella Heyer and Cadence Sires each shot an 8-over-par 44 on the front nine to lead the Dragons. Heyer was the medalist on a cardoff.
“It was another beautiful day for golf,” said Ankeny coach Seth Hagarty. “The wind did make it a bit challenging out there, especially since the greens had just been rolled. The wind was so gusty at times that it certainly had an impact on our putting. Overall, I thought we had some very good holes again, but we left a lot of strokes out there as well. So we will work on a few things in practice the rest of this week as we have a very busy week next week with three meets.”
Addison Smith led the Hawkettes with a 47. Her round included four pars, but she also took a 10 on the par-5, No. 6 hole.
“Addison had another great round,” Hagarty said. “I know she wishes she could replay No. 6, but I told her to focus on the pars that she had throughout her round. She has been very focused at practice, and that focus is starting to pay off in competition.”
Ankeny’s Isabella Ross shot a 51. Gia Blaser carded a 56, Gracie Block had a 57, Jori Webb fired a 61, and Ava Sesker added a 65.
“We will look to continuously improve while still having fun every day we get to play golf!” Hagarty said.
The Hawkettes will play in the Lamson Invitational on Monday at Willow Creek.
