It took two trips to Gilbert for the Ankeny Centennial baseball team to post a 12-0 victory in five innings in a non-conference game last week.
The second-ranked Jaguars built a 6-0 lead in the first two innings on Thursday before play was suspended due to rain. They returned 24 hours later to complete the game.
“Gilbert’s a good team,” said Centennial coach Mark Hey. “They came back ready to go after us after a rather lengthy rain delay, but I was really happy that our kids responded well. They played well both days.”
Easton Pratt and Preston Glatt (1-0) combined on a two-hitter with six strikeouts as Centennial improved to 2-0 on the season. Pratt needed 38 pitches to get through the first two innings on Thursday.
“Easton’s pitch count was too high for him to come back again,” Hey said. “But I thought both guys threw great.”
Easton Miller went 3-for-4 in the win. He scored three runs and drove in two more.
“Miller is swinging the bat really well,” Hey said. “We keep track of barrels in the dugout, and he had quite a few. It just seemed like every time he swung the bat he was barreling the ball up.”
Sean Stewart went 2-for-2 and scored twice, while Nick Severson went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Damin Churchman went 2-for-4 with a triple and knocked in three runs.
“Nick continues to hit the ball well, and Damin is obviously off to a good start as well,” Hey said. “Just pretty much all the way up and down the lineup, we’re getting good production.”
Gilbert’s record dropped to 1-1.
The Jaguars will play a doubleheader at Waukee (2-1) on Monday. It will be the CIML Conference opener for both teams.
