Ankeny golfer Drew Hensen could have elected to play in college for a school in a warmer climate.
Instead, he decided to stay close to home.
Hensen has verbally committed to play for Iowa State. He announced his decision via social media on Friday.
“Excited to announce that I have committed to continue my golf and academic career at Iowa State University. Go Clones!” he tweeted.
Hensen placed fifth in the Class 4A state meet earlier this month. He led the Hawks to a 10th-place finish.
Hensen said he communicated with several schools from all over the country before making his decision.
“Everything about Iowa State’s program impressed me,” he said. “From the new Stark center and golf facilities to coaching staff and roster. All of those factors made Iowa State feel like the perfect place for me.”
Hensen will be reunited with former Ankeny teammate Hunter Johnson, who is a member of the Iowa State squad.
“I have heard only great things from Hunter and other players I know on the team,” Hensen said.
