The Ankeny Centennial wrestlers remained unbeaten in dual-meet competition with a pair of victories on Thursday on its Senior Night.
The host Jaguars rolled to a 66-6 win over Council Bluffs Lewis Central in a non-conference meet, then followed with a 43-22 triumph over Valley in a CIML Conference dual. They raised their records to 4-0 in the league and 12-0 overall.
“We wrestled well,” said Centennial coach Jay Groth, whose team is 10th in Class 3A in the dual rankings from the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association. “We did what we needed to do–we scored bonus points against Valley. They’re a good team and they’ve got some good kids, but we matched up well and wrestled well. I couldn’t be happier right now going into break.”
Centennial won nine of the 14 matches against Valley. Mitchell Grider at 285 pounds, Cale Vandermark at 113, Cody Vandermark at 120, Tyler Brennan at 138 and Ari Ehlts at 165 each had a fall.
The Jaguars had four pins against Lewis Central. They won five other matches by forfeit.
Cody Vandermark had perhaps the biggest win of the night. He posted an 11-5 decision over fourth-ranked Drew Anderson.
“Cody just dominated the whole match,” Groth said. “He’s 16-1, but (for some reason) he keeps dropping in the rankings. I don’t get it, but that’s why the rankings don’t matter.”
Groth is hoping that his team can get healthy over the holiday break.
“We’re still missing a couple guys,” he said. “If we’d had them tonight, I think we would have beaten Valley by more than what we did.”
