Ankeny girls’ soccer standout Sophie Loeffler has verbally committed to St. Cloud State.
Loeffler, a junior defender, announced her decision via social media on Friday.
“Beyond blessed to announce my commitment to continue my academic & soccer career at St. Cloud State University!” she tweeted. “I’m very thankful to my family, coaches, teammates, and friends for believing in me and all of their support. So excited for the next chapter! Go Huskies”
Loeffler said she looked at a few schools before making her choice.
“It was tough at first, but once I got to St. Cloud I knew I wanted to go there,” Loeffler said. “I just loved St. Cloud’s atmosphere and felt at home when I was on campus. Their coaches are amazing, and the entire team is welcoming and brings a good competitive vibe.
“They’re Div. II, but they have been doing really well in recent years and have proven to be one of the top DII schools,” she added.
Loeffler scored one goal last year while helping the Hawkettes to a 12-4-1 record and a state tournament appearance. She was a key part of a defensive unit that allowed just three goals all season and was named to the CIML Conference third team.
Loeffler has also excelled on the track and in the swimming pool. In November, she placed ninth in the 100 butterfly at the girls’ state swim meet.
Last spring, Loeffler ran on the winning 4×800 relay at the girls’ state track meet. She helped the Hawkettes to a fifth-place finish in Class 4A.
