Two days after helping the Ankeny boys’ shuttle hurdle relay team to a school record, junior Hayden Carlson set another mark on Saturday.
Carlson raced to a second-place finish in the 110 hurdles at the Ruth Marske Indoor Invitational, which was held at South Dakota State University. He posted a time of 14.36 seconds.
Teammates Gavin Wise (15.64) and Sam Madsen (15.73) placed 11th and 13th, respectively, in the same event. Those three joined Landon Pote on the shuttle hurdle relay unit that posted a time of 57.67 seconds, the third-fastest all-time in Iowa, in the Early Bird Relays on Thursday at Waukee Northwest.
“Hayden, Gavin and Sam set the tone for the team in the highs,” said Ankeny coach Jordan Mullen. “This time last year they weren’t even close to the times they ran. They are very hungry and always wanting more so we will get back to work on Monday!
“Hayden hit the Blue Oval standard (for the Drake Relays) and took down old teammate CJ Accola’s school record, which was very fun to watch,” he added.
Carlson helped Ankeny to a fourth-place finish overall. The Hawks scored 48 points.
Sioux Falls (S.D.) Lincoln racked up 120 points to defend its team title. Waukee Northwest was second with 68.
“The team ran great!” Mullen said. “We had PRs across the board again, and the boys were really happy with their performances.”
Ankeny’s lone victory came in the 3,200, where Ethan Zuber won the race in a time of 9:14.07. He also met the Blue Oval standard.
“Ethan is on a mission this year!” Mullen said. “He ran 9:14 by himself and pulled the entire field to PRs. He is just starting to find his groove, and we all know how powerful he is!”
Isaiah Smith placed in a pair of events for the Hawks. He was the runner-up in the 1,600 in 4:18.50 and took fourth in the 800 in 1:58.67.
“Ike showed he is here to play this year!” Mullen said. “He had a huge double, running 4:18 and some change and then doubling back and setting a PR in the open 800 as well! I’m looking forward to see what he can do the rest the year!”
Alexander Zuber placed third in the 200 in 23.01 seconds. He also anchored Ankeny to a fourth-place finish in the 4×100 relay, teaming up with Samuel Sandvig, Caden Henkes and Wise to post a time of 43.39.
“Alex ran a great 200. That was also a big PR for him, and he can’t wait to get outdoors and run that race!” Mullen said. “And the 4×1 ran really well, and we will continue to see some time drops in that race!”
Tate Brownsberger placed third in the 400 in 51.68.
“Tate had a monster double!” Mullen said. “He ran his best ever open 400 and then doubled back and ran a great open 800!”
