The Ankeny girls’ golf team placed third among five squads in the season-opening Waukee Northwest Invitational on Monday at The Legacy Golf Club in Norwalk.
The Hawkettes posted a score of 413 on a cold and windy day.
“It was so great to get back into competition this year,” said Ankeny coach Kelley Emke. “It was definitely a hard day on the course with high winds and cold temperatures. I am so proud of the girls for pushing through and getting third-place medals at their first meet of the year.”
Isabella Ross carded a 92 to lead Ankeny. She placed seventh as an individual.
Ross’ sister, Madalyn, fired a 94 and tied for eighth with the Dallas Center-Grimes duo of Joey Moberg and Greer Kleis.
“Isabella and Madalyn both showed so much promise, still shooting low scores even in the conditions,” Emke said. “It gave us a great first start, and let us know where we can improve before (the Ankeny Centennial Invitational) on Monday (at Briarwood Golf Club).”
Northwest easily defended its team title. The Wolves shot a 344 to finish 29 strokes ahead of runner-up Norwalk.
Northwest’s Hannah Kenkel shot an 83 to earn medalist honors. Two of her teammates, Piper Sandfort and Adalyn Wiig, each carded an 85 to tie for runner-up honors with Lydia Krueger of Norwalk.
