The Ankeny girls’ golf team posted four scores in the 40s on Wednesday at Jester Park, allowing the Hawkettes to shoot a team total of 180 in a CIML Conference triangular meet.
Unfortunately, Southeast Polk and host Johnston were just a little bit better. The Rams shot a 175 to edge the Dragons by one stroke and Ankeny by five.
“We lost another close one today,” said Ankeny coach Kelley Emke. “The girls did great coming back from a hard day.”
All three squads were coming off 18-hole meets on Tuesday. The Hawkettes had placed 10th in the Turk Bowman Invitational at Veenker Golf Course in Ames, while the Dragons took ninth and Southeast Polk finished 12th in the Linn-Mar Invitational at Hunters Ridge Golf Course in Marion.
On Wednesday, Anna Wahman carded a 36 to earn medalist honors for the Rams. Teammate Kate Wahman was the runner-up with a 39.
Ankeny’s Madalyn Ross placed fourth overall with a 43. Ava Sesker and Isabella Ross each carded a 45, Ava Clarkson had a 47, Catherine Nelson fired a 50, and Aubree Moeller added a 54.
“I’m really proud of Ava Sesker for her personal best nine and for us having four scores in the 40s!” Emke said. “It’s really coming together, and we’re excited to keep competing.”
Southeast Polk remained unbeaten in conference dual meets, improving to 6-0. Johnston is now 4-2, while Ankeny fell to 1-5.
