Wednesday was a tough day for both the Ankeny and Ankeny Centennial girls’ golf teams.
The 19th-ranked Jaguars lost to both No. 4 Waukee Northwest and No. 12 Southeast Polk at Briarwood Golf Club, while the Hawkettes fell to both Waukee and Dowling Catholic in another triangular meet at Blank Golf Course.
“It was a hard loss today for all of us,” said Ankeny coach Kelley Emke. “We had beaten both teams previously so we were hoping for that win, but a lot didn’t go our way.”
The meet at Briarwood decided the outright conference champion. Northwest shot a 150 to finish 8-0 in the league, while Southeast Polk posted a 170 total and took second place at 7-1.
Centennial finished 4-4 in the conference after shooting a 187 on its home course.
“I thought we were a little tight today,” said Centennial coach John Petersen. “Maybe because it was our Senior Day, or maybe because we played the top two teams in the conference? I don’t know.”
Northwest’s Lola Minnick carded a 35 to earn medalist honors. Teammate Adalyn Wiig was the runner-up with a 37.

Cate Trewet fired a 43 to lead the Jaguars. Kate Geiselhart shot a 44.
Centennial’s Ava Entrekin and Danika Kraus each carded a 50. Kaylee Sprecher had a 51, and Madison Sexton added a 56.
“We know we need to compete at that level to have a chance in our district,” Petersen said of the Wolves and Rams. “We see both teams again (Thursday) at Copper Creek, and our goal will be to close that gap we saw today.”
At Blank, Waukee shot a 189 to defeat both of its conference rivals. Dowling posted a 196 total to edge Ankeny (198) by two strokes.
The Hawkettes finished 1-7 in the league.
“Lots of trees and bad lies just didn’t get us the scores we needed,” Emke said. “We’re all ready for a fresh start and glad we got a glimpse of the course before the conference meet there (on May 14).”
Waukee’s Bailey Cox shot a 43 to earn medalist honors. She edged runner-up Meg Lock of Dowling by two strokes.

Madalyn Ross carded a 47 to lead Ankeny, while Aubree Moeller fired a 49. Ava Sesker and Isabella Ross each shot a 51, and Catherine Nelson had a 52.
Both Ankeny and Centennial will compete in the Southeast Polk Invitational on Thursday.
