Both the Ankeny Centennial and Ankeny girls’ golf teams have some ground to make up on Wednesday.
The Jaguars sit in eighth place among 12 squads in the CIML Conference Invitational following Monday’s opening round at the Des Moines Golf and Country Club. They posted a score of 376 after shooting in the 360s twice in the last week, but Centennial coach John Petersen wasn’t unhappy with his team’s play.
“Today was a lot of fun,” Petersen said. “I felt good about our score. None of our players had played the course before.”
Ankeny, meanwhile, finds itself in ninth place after shooting a 382. The final round will be played on Wednesday at Blank Golf Course, beginning at 8 a.m.
“We had a strong start today, but we definitely need to get better on Wednesday,” said Ankeny coach Kelley Emke. “We came really close to beating or tying many teams.”
This year’s meet consists of the nine teams from the CIML Conference along with Ames, Marshalltown and Ottumwa from the Alliance Conference. Three of the top six squads and six of the top 15 in Class 4A are in the field.
No. 3 Waukee Northwest shot a 313 to take the first-round lead. The Wolves won last year’s meet by 49 strokes.
No. 1 Ames sits in second place with a 318. No. 6 Marshalltown is in third at 326, followed by No. 12 Valley at 340.
Natalie Henson of Marshalltown leads the individual standings after shooting a 72. She holds a three-stroke lead over Northwest’s Lola Minnick.

Centennial’s Cate Trewet fired an 85 and is in 18th place. Ankeny’s Isabella Ross is in 25th with a 90.
Kate Geiselhart carded a 94 for the Jaguars. Danika Kraus shot a 97, Kaylee Sprecher had a 100, Lauren Wilford fired a 101, and Teagan Skinner added a 105.
“Cate had a season-low score, which was great to see,” Petersen said. “I’m looking forward to Wednesday when we play the second round. We are hoping to move up in the overall standings.”
Madalyn Ross shot a 91 for the Hawkettes. Aubree Moeller carded a 98, Ava Sesker and Ava Clarkson each had a 103, and Catherine Nelson finished with a 105.
“The girls really enjoyed getting to play DGCC and overall it’s nice to see their hard work coming together,” Emke said. “We really want four scores under 100 so hopefully we can do that on Wednesday!”
