The Ankeny doubles team of Dylan Victor and Garrett Weichers was eliminated from the boys’ Class 2A state tennis tournament on Tuesday at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex in Iowa City.
Victor and Weichers opened the tournament with a 6-1, 6-4 loss to Brock Davis and Preston Haefner of Cedar Rapids Washington. The Hawks played their best tennis in the second set and were hoping to force a decisive super-tiebreaker, but Davis and Haefner held on for the win.
“We were down 5-2, then came back to 5-4 and gave away our serve with a double fault at match point,” said Ankeny coach Ron Miller.
Victor and Weichers then dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Drew Fenton and Vincent Flynn of Waukee Northwest in a first-round consolation match. Fenton and Flynn had lost in three sets in the opening round to fourth-seeded Anthony Medina and Derek Hua of Iowa City West, who then rolled to a 6-3, 6-2 win over Davis and Haefner to advance to Wednesday’s semifinals.
“I think we were a little overwhelmed with the event, but we had a good year at No. 1 and 2 singles and 1 doubles,” Miller said.
The top four seeds all advanced to the semifinals. Medina and Hua will play top-seeded Alex Mirsky and Seppe Frantianni of Valley, while No. 2 Karthik Ganesh and Jatin Kodavatiganti of Pleasant Valley will meet No. 3 Vivek Kothari and Maarten Beekhuis of Northwest.
