The Ankeny baseball team earned its first wins of the season on Friday by sweeping a non-conference doubleheader against visiting Bondurant-Farrar.
One big inning proved to be the difference in both games. The Hawks used a five-run third to post a 7-2 victory in the opener, then had a five-run fourth in the nightcap en route to a 9-6 triumph.
“The boys played well,” said Ankeny coach Joe Balvanz.
Lucas Bellis went 2-for-3 and had two RBIs in the first game. Austin Hans also went 2-for-3, while Brady Carter went 2-for-4.
Jackson Romig and Ben Taylor each drove in a run for Ankeny, which got a combined one-hitter from the duo of Jackson Molloy and Ronnie Zimmerman. Molloy (1-0) had four strikeouts over the first 4 2/3 innings before Zimmerman got the final seven outs without giving up a hit.
The Hawks (2-7) then pounded out 11 hits in the second game. Carter led the way, going 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
Will Davies went 2-for-4 and knocked in a pair of runs. Ace Parton went 2-for-3 with a double and scored twice, while Kinnick Vos drove in a run.
Three Ankeny pitchers combined on a seven-hitter. Hans (1-0) got the win, allowing three earned runs on four hits over 2 2/3 innings.
Bondurant-Farrar dropped to 3-3 on the season.
The Hawks will host a CIML Conference game against Ankeny Centennial (4-2) on Monday. The Jaguars are coming off a doubleheader sweep at second-ranked Johnston on Thursday.
